Arapaho National Forest

Arapaho National Forest spans nearly 285,000 acres across Colorado, offering a broad mix of outdoor recreation across forest and alpine terrain. The forest supports fishing in its streams and lakes, hiking and backpacking on an extensive trail network, dispersed camping throughout its boundaries, and horseback riding on designated routes. Hunters also use the forest seasonally. A scenic drive is a practical way to experience the landscape if you're not equipped for backcountry travel.

Access depends on which trailhead or area you target—the forest is spread across a large region, so plan your route before arriving. Summer and early fall are the prime seasons, when trails are snow-free and weather is most stable. Winter transforms the forest into snow country, and many high-elevation routes become impassable or require snowshoes or skis. Spring and late fall are shoulder seasons with variable conditions. Always check current conditions and fire restrictions with the Forest Service before heading out.
