About Beaverhead National Forest
Beaverhead National Forest spans nearly 571,000 acres across southwestern Montana, offering a mix of high-country terrain, meadows, and forested valleys open to the full range of Forest Service recreation. The landscape supports fishing in streams and lakes, hiking and backpacking on an extensive trail network, dispersed camping throughout the forest, and horseback riding on many routes. Hunting seasons draw visitors in fall; scenic driving is possible on forest roads, and wildlife viewing opportunities exist year-round for those patient enough to look.
Access is straightforward from nearby towns, but the forest's elevation and latitude mean that high-country trails and passes remain snowbound into early summer. Fall typically offers the clearest, most stable weather, while winter closes many higher elevations. Spring and early summer bring mud and runoff but opening views as snow recedes. Dispersed camping is available throughout, though facilities and services remain sparse—plan ahead and bring supplies.
