Boise National Forest

Boise National Forest spans nearly a million acres across central Idaho, offering a vast landscape for backcountry recreation and scenic exploration. The forest supports hiking, backpacking, and dispersed camping throughout its terrain, along with fishing in streams and lakes. Mountain biking trails and seasonal hunting opportunities draw visitors across the year. Multiple scenic driving routes wind through the forest, providing access to viewpoints and trailheads for day use or overnight trips.

Access is year-round along major corridors, though higher elevations and remote areas are best visited May through October. Winter brings snow to much of the forest, closing many high-elevation routes and trails from December through March but opening possibilities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in accessible zones. Spring and fall offer moderate conditions with fewer crowds. The forest is managed by the US Forest Service under multiple-use guidelines, meaning recreation coexists with other land uses across the landscape.
