About Chippewa National Forest

Chippewa National Forest spans over 643,000 acres across Minnesota, offering a landscape of lakes, wetlands, and boreal forest typical of the upper Midwest. The forest supports a full range of outdoor pursuits: anglers fish for walleye, northern pike, and other species in numerous lakes and streams; hikers and backpackers use a network of trails; dispersed camping is available throughout the forest on Forest Service land; and hunters pursue game during designated seasons. Scenic driving routes wind through the forest, and wildlife viewing—including opportunities to see bald eagles and migratory waterfowl—draws visitors year-round. Winter transforms the forest, opening opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Access is straightforward from Minnesota communities, and the forest remains open to public recreation throughout the year. Summer and early fall are the most popular seasons, when trails are clear, camping is comfortable, and fishing peaks. Winter visits are feasible but require preparation for cold temperatures and snow. Spring and late fall can be wet and muddy. Always check with the Forest Service for current conditions, fire restrictions, and any seasonal closures before planning your trip.
