Comanche National Grassland

Comanche National Grassland spans over 434,000 acres across southeastern Colorado, offering visitors a working landscape of open grasslands, scattered woodlands, and canyon country managed for multiple uses. The grassland supports hiking, backpacking, and dispersed camping throughout its terrain, along with opportunities for fishing in its waters and wildlife viewing across the open country. Hunting is popular seasonally, and scenic driving provides access to the landscape's varied character without requiring backcountry travel.

Visitors should expect a high-desert climate with significant temperature swings between seasons. Spring and fall offer moderate conditions, while summer brings warm days ideal for outdoor recreation. Winter can present challenging conditions, especially at higher elevations and in canyon areas where access may become difficult. Dispersed camping is available across the grassland, and the Forest Service maintains various access points and roads throughout the property. Come prepared for variable weather and bring adequate water, as development is minimal across much of the area.
