Custer National Forest

Custer National Forest spans over 700,000 acres across Montana, offering diverse recreation across a landscape managed for multiple uses. The forest supports fishing in its streams and lakes, hiking and backpacking on its trail network, dispersed camping throughout its holdings, and hunting seasons for game species. Scenic driving routes wind through the forest, and horseback riding is common on many trails. Winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing to accessible areas.

Visitation varies by season and elevation. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable access and pleasant conditions for most activities. Spring and late fall can be wet and muddy, while winter snow closes higher terrain and many backcountry routes. Roads and dispersed campsites remain available year-round in lower elevations, though snow and ice are common from December through March.
