Deschutes National Forest

Deschutes National Forest spans over 1.2 million acres across central Oregon, offering a diverse landscape for outdoor recreation throughout much of the year. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on numerous trails, dispersed camping in undeveloped areas, and fishing in lakes and streams. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and scenic driving are popular ways to explore the forest, while hunters use the area during appropriate seasons. Winter brings snowshoe and cross-country ski opportunities to higher elevations.

Access is generally good from nearby towns, with multiple entry points and trailheads throughout the forest. Summer and early fall represent the peak season, when most trails are snow-free and weather is stable. Spring and late fall remain accessible but may have lingering snow at higher elevations or early storms. Winter conditions—heavy snow and cold—limit travel to lower elevations and require appropriate winter gear and experience.
