About Flathead National Forest

Flathead National Forest sprawls across nearly 813,500 acres in western Montana, offering a vast landscape of public land managed by the Forest Service for multiple uses. The forest supports a broad range of outdoor recreation year-round: hikers and backpackers find extensive trail networks, anglers pursue fish in streams and lakes, hunters use the forest during designated seasons, and dispersed camping is available throughout. Scenic drives wind through the forest, and horseback riding is common on many routes. Winter transforms the area, bringing snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and backcountry skiing opportunities for those equipped to travel in snow.

Access is generally good during the warmer months—late spring through early fall—when roads are clear and high-elevation areas become passable. Summer and early autumn represent the prime season, though the forest remains accessible into October. Winter conditions, particularly from December through March, can close higher routes and backcountry access, making this a season for lower-elevation or groomed activities only. Spring snowmelt can delay trail opening into May. Come prepared for rapidly changing weather and bring maps and supplies; this is working public land, not a developed park, and self-sufficiency is expected.
