Mount Sopris is a 6.8-mile loop trail located near Carbondale, Colorado, offering a challenging alpine experience with 3,702 feet of elevation gain. The route ascends to 12,953 feet, providing expansive views of the Maroon Bells and surrounding peaks throughout the journey. The trail begins near Redstone and climbs steadily through aspen and conifer forests before breaking into alpine tundra. Two summits comprise the mountain's distinctive double peak, with the western summit being slightly higher. Most hikers complete both peaks during a single outing, though the loop structure allows flexibility in routing. The hike is recommended for experienced hikers due to sustained elevation gain and rocky, steep sections near the summits. Trail conditions vary seasonally, with snow persisting into early summer and thunderstorms common in afternoon hours during monsoon season. The area offers access to pristine backcountry terrain within the White River National Forest. Due to the high elevation and exposed ridgeline, weather changes rapidly. Bring adequate water, as reliable sources are limited above treeline.
