Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness

The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness spans nearly a million acres across Montana, offering alpine and subalpine terrain shaped by glaciation and high elevation. This is true backcountry—no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. You'll find remote valleys, clear lakes, and open ridges, all managed under strict wilderness rules that require self-sufficiency and Leave No Trace ethics.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. Access is by foot from trailheads at the wilderness boundary; there is no vehicle travel once you enter. The terrain is primitive and weather can shift quickly at elevation. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable window for travel, though snow lingers into early summer and returns by late fall.

Visitors should expect a genuine wilderness experience—solitude, minimal infrastructure, and total responsibility for navigation, safety, and camp impact.
