About Agua Tibia Wilderness

Agua Tibia Wilderness is a 17,470-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in California, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude away from developed roads and mechanized travel.

Visiting requires adherence to strict wilderness rules: no motorized vehicles, no mountain bikes, and no mechanized equipment. Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out everything you pack in, camp only in designated areas where permitted, and minimize your impact on the land. This is untrammeled backcountry where you'll encounter few crowds and no infrastructure.

Access and timing matter. Spring and fall typically offer the most pleasant conditions, though snow and winter weather can close or make routes difficult during cold months. Summer brings heat to lower elevations. Plan ahead, bring detailed maps, and be self-sufficient; there are no services or supply points within the wilderness boundary.
