Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness Area

Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness Area is a 7,233-acre federally designated Wilderness in northern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The landscape is primitive backcountry characterized by badlands and colorful geological formations, offering visitors a remote and undeveloped setting far from roads and development.

The wilderness is open to hiking and backpacking for those seeking solitude and a true backcountry experience. There are no motorized vehicles, bicycles, or mechanized travel of any kind permitted—foot travel only. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles, pack out all waste, camp responsibly, and respect the wilderness character that the federal designation protects.

Access is limited to foot traffic, and the remoteness of the area means you should arrive well-prepared with water, maps, and self-sufficiency in mind. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, though summer is also viable. Winter can present hazards and access challenges. This is a place for experienced backcountry travelers who value solitude and are committed to minimal-impact wilderness use.
