Allegheny Islands Wilderness

Allegheny Islands Wilderness is a 372-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Pennsylvania, managed by the Forest Service. It preserves primitive backcountry where motorized travel, roads, and mechanized equipment are prohibited—the core rule of any designated Wilderness.

The area offers hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and Leave No Trace principles define the experience. Visitors should expect to carry out everything they carry in, camp only where permitted, and travel on foot or by other non-mechanized means. Access is limited to trail entry points, and the landscape reflects the wilderness character of the region.

Visit during the warmer months when conditions are most favorable. Winter weather can be severe, and spring and fall offer moderate conditions. Plan accordingly for a remote, primitive experience where self-reliance and respect for the land are essential.
