Alpine Lakes Wilderness

Alpine Lakes Wilderness is a 415,203-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Washington managed by the Forest Service. The landscape ranges across alpine terrain, glaciated valleys, and forested backcountry accessible only by foot—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted within its boundaries. Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to experience the area, offering genuine solitude and primitive conditions for those willing to carry everything they need.

Visiting means embracing wilderness rules: you travel by foot only, camp in designated or dispersed sites depending on local regulations, pack out everything you pack in, and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout. The season runs roughly from late spring through early fall, when snow clears from high passes and lower elevations become snow-free. Access points ring the perimeter; there is no road through the interior. Winter and early spring bring heavy snow and avalanche hazard to higher elevations, effectively closing much of the area to safe travel.
