About Bald Knob Wilderness

Bald Knob Wilderness is a 5,830-acre federally protected wilderness area in Illinois, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and quiet are the draw.

Visitors should expect a true wilderness experience governed by strict regulations: no roads, no motors, and no mechanized travel of any kind. All use must follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and keep your footprint minimal. This is a place for self-reliant travel on foot.

Access and timing depend on weather and trail conditions typical of the Illinois region. Spring through fall is generally passable, though winter can present challenges. Come prepared for the conditions and plan accordingly. There are no facilities or services within the wilderness itself, so bring everything you need.
