Engineer Mountain is a challenging out-and-back trail in Colorado's Rio Grande National Forest, managed by the Conejos Peak Ranger District. The 20.2-mile route gains 5,333 feet of elevation, making it a strenuous full-day hike suitable for experienced hikers with solid fitness levels. Located in southern Colorado near the San Juan Mountains, this trail offers a demanding alpine experience. The significant elevation gain is spread across the round-trip distance, providing a sustained climb with rewarding high-country views. The out-and-back format allows hikers to turn back at any point if conditions or energy levels warrant it.
