Alpine Tunnel is a 1.6-mile out-and-back trail in Colorado that leads to a historic mining tunnel carved through the Continental Divide. The trail gains 401 feet of elevation as it ascends through subalpine terrain toward this 19th-century engineering landmark. The hike follows remnants of the old railroad grade that once supported mining operations in the area. Hikers will encounter the tunnel entrance, a substantial stone and timber structure that provides insight into Colorado's mining heritage. The surrounding landscape features alpine vegetation and rock outcrops typical of high-elevation terrain. This is a moderate day hike suitable for visitors interested in both natural scenery and historical sites. The out-and-back format makes it easy to turn back at any point, and the relatively short distance makes it accessible for families with adequate fitness levels.
