The Elaine Trail is a challenging 3.3-mile out-and-back hike located near Colorado in the Uncompahgre National Forest, managed by the Ouray Ranger District of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests. With 2,152 feet of elevation gain, this route demands significant effort and is best suited for experienced hikers prepared for steep terrain. The out-and-back format means hikers will ascend to the turnaround point and retrace their steps on the return, accumulating the full elevation gain on both directions of travel. The steep gradient makes this a strenuous option that rewards fit hikers with alpine scenery typical of the San Juan Mountains region. This trail is maintained by the Ouray Ranger District and is appropriate for day hiking. Given the elevation gain compressed into a short distance, hikers should plan accordingly with plenty of water and allow sufficient time to complete the hike before dark. The route is best attempted during summer and early fall when snow has cleared from higher elevations.
